Teaching Millennials How To Check Fluids in a Car

If we had a checklist of things to teach our kids as we raised them into adulthood, things might be a little easier.

At least, that’s how I see it.

From how to feed and clothe themselves to how to drive and live on their own.

It’s a lot.

Teaching Millennials How To Check Fluids in a Car

Check Fluids in a Car

Sometimes, I know this as a parent to two adult children, we forget a thing or two along the way. You often hear (older) generations mention this when referring to millennials.

But, I think it all depends on which ones you know!

After all, it sort of comes back to us as their parents. Or so some people say. F

or me, I am just trying to raise my kids to be good law-abiding citizens with a compassion-filled heart… and the knowledge it takes to get through this life.

Recently I realized this means teaching them proper car maintenance. After all, they own cars. They drive them. I need to make sure they can maintain them.

We started with something easy: checking the fluids in their cars.

Because you don’t necessarily see these every day or hear about them often — the power steering fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid — we seemed to have forgotten to include them in past teachable moments.

Therefore, we took this as the perfect opportunity to do so using trusted Prestone® products.

Prestone® Bug Wash® Windshield Washer Fluid

Windshield Washer Fluid

Personally, I can’t stand anything on my windshield. No dots. Bugs. Smears. Anything. Therefore, windshield washer fluid is a necessity in any car I’m driving.

A clear view of the road helps keep everyone in the car safe!

And with Prestone BugWash, it only takes a minute or two to be back on the road.

You simply add the full-strength product directly into the washer-fluid reservoir and you’re ready to go!

Prestone® Power Steering Fluid

Power Steering Fluid

Only certain vehicles will use power steering fluid, so the first step is to locate the reservoir cylinder with the engine off.

Once you’ve found it, remove the cap and check the current level. Then, fill the reservoir to its specified level without overfilling.

Check regularly or when you are having a difficult time turning the wheel.

Prestone recommends you change your power-steering fluid every 2 to 3 years or 30K to 60K miles.

Prestone® DOT 3 High Temperature Synthetic Brake Fluid

DOT 3 High-Temperature Synthetic Brake Fluid

The last thing you want for yourself, your children, or anyone on the road really, is for their brakes to fail.

First things first, find the brake fluid reservoir, again, with the engine off.

Wipe off the outside of the master cylinder to prevent dirt or dust from getting inside, then remove any old brake fluid. Then, pour the new brake fluid into the reservoir and replace the cap.

You will then need to bleed the system to flush the old fluids out. Check your manual for instructions on how to do that.

Prestone has been protecting drivers and their vehicles since 1927! I remember helping my dad check the fluids in each of his pick-up trucks through the years. Every time, he would reach for that familiar yellow container.

Working under the hood with my dad was a favorite pastime for me and I enjoy sharing it with my kids now.

They appreciate cars the way I was taught to and, now, they will know how to properly maintain them to last a long time.

When was the last time you checked the fluids in your car?
