When people find out I have a daughter in college, they often tell me I don’t look old enough to have a daughter in college. Admittedly, there are times when I agree with them. Other times, I feel much older than that even. And, in actuality, I have two old enough for college and another right on their heels.
Seventeen: College Goals
In fact, this year, we’ve begun discussing her college goals. She will be 15 soon, and in our homeschool years, that is right on the cusp of graduation. Both her older sister and brother graduated at 16. Therefore, it’s the perfect time to start talking about college: where she wants to attend, what she wants to do, how much it’s going to cost. With one about to graduate from college, I know it goes much further beyond those conversations, but it’s a good start.
Fortunately, Bluestreak Books sent me a copy of Seventeen: College Goals so that we could really get started in our planning. She has a pretty good idea now of what she wants to go to school for, it now becomes where, how, etc.
The only thing standing between you and that college life is figuring out where you might want to go, completing your applications, writing a killer essay, scoring solid test scores, shining in your activities, getting glowing recommendations, and . . . okay, that’s a lot. But even though being accepted into college can seem big and overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be.
That’s where Seventeen: College Goals comes in. This stress-free guide—part-planner, part-journal—will help walk you through the step-by-step process of applying to colleges. There are pages filled with practical cheat sheets, handy life hacks, thoughtful tips, fun quizzes, inspiring quotes from your favorite celebs and leaders, and prompts that will push you to self-reflect. (After all, that’s what college essays are all about!) This way, you can freak out less about if you’ll get in, and actually start thinking about which school’s offer you’re going to accept.
We’re fortunate, again, in that we have her older siblings to help with the process. They both took different paths in their college choices, so we’ll be able to have different perspectives to hear from. These fresh angles paired with Seventeen: College Goals should help us get her prepared and ready to make the important decisions over the next year. I can’t say it’s easy being the parent of college-aged kids either, but I’m sure proud of how our kids seem to have embraced their education.
