National School Choice Week Spotlights Education Choices

National School Choice Week will be held January 22-28, 2017 with one goal in mind: to raise public awareness of all types of education options for children.

Parents often believe they only have two choices — public or private school — there are actually several options to choose from.

The educational choices include traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, online learning, private schools, and homeschooling.

While I was pregnant with Cheyenne, 21 years ago, I remember the conversation Colby and I had while driving home one day.

I had decided to homeschool and presented the idea to him to see what he thought. 21 years ago, there wasn’t a lot of information available for us to research and consider, but I did my best digging through books.

By the time Chey was ready to start school, we were not at a point where we could homeschool, so we enrolled her in public school. Wyatt began in private school.

By the time, Jaden was born, we were finally able to homeschool. This year, we are in our 14th year of the homeschool journey.

Even with our decision to homeschool, we still face the question of “how” to teach the kids each year. Every child is different and learns in their own way.

Therefore, we found that while one child may do well with one curriculum, it doesn’t fit another’s learning style.

We began with traditional homeschool methods and then quickly moved to online learning — and then to a public virtual school.

We have quite literally tried almost every educational option there is in order to find the one that fits our family best.

Fortunately, we have the ability and those options to do so.

Now that Cheyenne and Wyatt have graduated, we are using online programs to supplement our more unschooling method of teaching.

We travel with the girls and show them the places and things they read about in their social studies lessons.

From visiting a farm in Oregon that supplied travelers during the days of the Oregon Trail to spending a moment of silence at the 9/11 Memorial, there is much to be learned and discovered.

As a parent, I love knowing we have more choices than ever when it comes to educating our children.

With more than 20,000 events scheduled nationwide, National School Choice Week will be the largest series of education events in US history.

Some parents attend events to show gratitude for the choices they have made for their own children, while others seek information about other options available to them.
