DIY Garage Makeover Using Practical Garage Storage Ideas

The garage has always been our catch-all space. The place where things go when it doesn’t have a specific spot to go inside.

And my husband is the worst about throwing everything into the garage. I do mean EVERYTHING.

When we moved recently, we found so many things we thought we had lost or simply forgot about.

Now, my goal is to help prevent that from happening. Being organized helps keep things far less stressful. Don’t you agree?

After installing our new WiFi Garage Door Opener and LiftMaster Automatic Garage Door Lock, we were excited about organizing the stuff inside the garage.

We knew it was not safe and secure, we just needed to help it look better—for our own sake. After all, who likes to navigate around boxes, bikes, and tools to walk through your garage?

And, yes, it is typically our main entry point when coming in with the kids. Oh, and did I mention that we haven’t been able to park a car in there in a few months?

So, that was a main part of getting it organized as well.

Clear Storage Bins on durable shelving

Using these garage storage ideas, we have been able to make some headway:

Bike Storage

With a large family who loves to ride bicycles, you can imagine how much space it takes to store several bikes. Using a wall-mounted bike storage system, we were easily able to hang 6 bikes and free up a lot of floor space.

Durable Shelving

We found durable shelving that is both practical and functional for the garage. Practical because it’s made of heavy-duty metal that is easy to clean and maintain.

Yet functional because it can hold several hundred pounds which comes in handy when storing heavy tools.

Clear Storage Bins

Speaking of storing your possessions, clear storage bins come in a variety of sizes and can hold a lot of items. Plus, with clear storage bins, it’s easy to see what’s inside.

Adding labels is an extra bonus and helps keep things even more organized. Also, store the lesser used or seasonal items on higher shelves so you can easily get to the things you use on a more consistent basis on lower shelves.

Peg Boards

Utilize every space in your garage by taking advantage of any available wall space. Pegboards are perfect for hanging small hand tools, cleaning supplies, and yard gear.

Not to mention, it helps keep smaller tools from getting misplaced and you can easily grab things in a hurry.

Tool Chest

When it comes to tools, there are a variety of pieces that can make up a good collection.

My husband had all of his tools thrown into one large bag and a few small toolboxes. In order to consolidate and organize, we bought a medium-sized tool chest that could sit on a corner shelf.

The drawers allowed him to better organize his tool sets and to help us get rid of a few unnecessary things, such as that large—very unpractical—tool bag.

Closed-Door Storage

Finally, we have photo props that we use for our business, as well as a few items that simply needed to be stored away from the environmental elements of the garage—but yet stay in the space.

Therefore, we found a few storage systems with doors to help us separate and organize things.

Closed-Door Storage

Of course, the first step is to take a look at everything you have in your garage to store. Then, as you begin planning, think of ways you can incorporate the storage options listed above.
