Compact Size with Roomy Feel : 2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring

Disclosure: We were loaned a 2014 Mazda CX5 Grand Touring to test drive for a week. Regardless, all opinions are 100% my own.

Have you been looking for a nice-sized SUV? Not too big, yet roomy enough to hold everything you need. We really like the compact SUV designs and were excited about taking the 2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring for a ride this past week.

In fact, we really wanted to take the SUV on an extended day trip just to see how it performed. I think it is safe to say we all really enjoyed the ride. Colby and I had plenty of leg space in the front of the vehicle, while the girls still had leg room in the back.

CX-5 premium seats

The double-stitched premium leather-trimmed seats in both the front and rear of the car made for quite a comfortable ride. Along with dual temperature settings for the driver and passenger, we were all set for a smooth ride. Colby adjusted his 8-way power adjustable seat and we set out on a little adventure about 2 hours East of Dallas.

CX5 TomTom Navigation

Using the in-dash 5.8″ full-color touch-screen display and integrated TomTom navigation, we input the address of the gator farm and decided on a route option. One quick touch of the screen and we had our directions and were off to see gators.

As we traveled down the highway, the CX-5 drove smooth and responded well to Colby’s demand on the throttle. With little engine and road noise, the youngest 2 girls were even to get a nap in as we drove. As a matter of fact, the aerodynamic curves of the vehicle and reduced wind turbulence made for a peaceful ride through the East Texas countryside.

CX-5 moonroof

The Mazda CX-5 offered us a luxurious ride with other features such as:

  • Power Moonroof
  • Advanced Keyless Entry & Start System
  • 60/40 split rear seating
  • Up to 64.8 cubic feet of cargo space
  • … and more

We utilized the blind-spot warning system on the busy highway out of town, and appreciated the backup camera when we left the gator farm. There were several animals running around and being able to see behind us was important. This feature is also incredibly important in our every day lives with children at home. It is, by far, one of my favorite features to have.

Finally, but certainly not least, the Mazda CX-5 was very impressive in the gas efficiency department. We averaged around 30 mpg on the highway and around 25 in the city as we drove around back at home. Even with the field trip and several errands to run through the week, we still returned it with enough gas to go another 50 or so miles. Not bad for an SUV of its size.

backseat fort

Not to mention, it had plenty of room for a little fort in the back seat for some alone time on the way home.
