A new year is always a great time for reflection. As we look back on one year’s passing, we look forward to another year’s possibilities. We ponder what may come and how we can achieve the goals we have set for ourselves.
Wish Upon a Star
As parents, we not only have ourselves to consider, but our children as well. What can we do different this year to better the lives of our children?
What did we do right last year that we need to continue doing in the new year?
How can we help our children make their own wishes and desires come true?
In Disney’s Pinocchio, the Blue Fairy grants Geppetto’s wish for a son… but there are conditions involved.
Pinocchio must learn to be brave, truthful and unselfish. He has to understand what it means to be a good boy, the difference between right and wrong, and how to listen to his conscience.
How many of us want the same thing in the lives of our children?
To understand what can happen when they set out with purpose and “Wish Upon a Star.”
Looking at our oldest daughter, I can see her working effortlessly to make her dreams come true.
Already in her fourth year of college, she is not only maintaining a 4.0 GPA in her school of business, but she also has an incredible internship leading her onward towards a successful career.
Additionally, she has been married for over a year and a half, has two fur babies, and is planning for the life she has always dreamed of.
I hope that Colby and I can continue to teach her younger siblings to be as determined and passionate about their wishes.
As an example, our daughter Jaden has a desire to sing and write songs to share her life with others.
Even at a young age, she has always had a driven attitude and strives for perfection in everything she does. We put her in music lessons two years ago when we noticed her constant humming.
From there we began with piano lessons that then transitioned into guitar, ukulele and, eventually perhaps, percussion. She has four original songs and performs well on stage.
Colby and I are willing to give her all we can to watch her live out her dreams, especially when we observe her “Got No Strings” mentality towards achieving her goals.
Our daughter Jaci’s enthusiasm is fashion driven. Not only does she enjoy wearing great clothes, but she wants to someday design them.
Therefore, we buy her sketch books, pencils, how-to draw books, a sewing machine and other tools to help her learn.
I teach her the ins-and-outs of Instagram and we talk about the various ways she can make a career out of her passions for fashion.
Even with all the resources we give our children, they are still responsible for so much more that we can only hope we instill along the way.
We can push Jaden onto a stage to perform, but that in no way fosters bravery. Instead we talk her through any anxieties and help her overcome any fears. In order to demonstrate truthfulness, we are open and honest with our kids.
Children learn by example and not giving them a reason to be dishonest goes a long way for building their character.
Finally, with a large family, it can be challenging to be selfish. We are one in many ways and ground our kids in humility through serving others.
We feed and clothe the homeless, adopt families for the holidays, and never stop looking for opportunities to give back. So much of what our children take into adulthood and forever hear through their conscience begins at home.
As a mother, my wish is that my children not only live a full, happy life… but that they live in such a way that others are encouraged by the life they see lived out.
