When was the last time you were presented with an opportunity to change the life of someone else? I was thrilled to learn about the Western Union “Chain of Betters” project recently because it empowers people with these opportunities. They believe “when money moves, better things happen.”
Chain of Betters
The way Western Union sees it, when money moves around the world it creates a chain of good deeds. “Moving money for better means moving money for a better world –creating value for individuals, businesses and for society.” Their Chain of Betters initiative is an idea that commissions us to find opportunities to change lives. Think of the possibilities. Once we all work together, we could begin to change lives in ways much larger than we could even imagine.
Why not start right where you are?! Last October, my family and I began gathering supplies, cooking meals, and serving the homeless in our downtown area. Every month, we collect everything we have and head to the same parking lot. We drive down the same streets and let everyone know we have arrived and then park to set up.
Over the past year, we have met wonderful people who have shared their stories with us. Some have come every month, others only visited on one occasion, and at least a few have updated us on how they were able to get a home. It’s always an eye-opening, humbling experience for all of us. We do it because we can, because we care, and because they touch our lives much more than we may be helping in theirs.
For us, it’s an easy decision. We have a heart for helping the homeless and do what we can to at least bring them a little comfort once a month. Last month, we were gifted a BBQ Brisket to share and had two full truck loads of clothes. The police officer who often stays nearby said it was the biggest gathering he had seen out there. We had more than 150 homeless men, women and children come through that day. We are doing our part to help make the world better for others.
Western Union believes,
moving money for better means moving money for a better world. A business expands. A family connects. A child goes to college. Emergency aid arrives the moment it’s needed. An economy prospers, an opportunity opens, a community heals.
How can you give with the Chain of Betters initiative?
Pour into the lives of others and see what happens. You might be surprised by how it changes you more than them.
