Remember when I told you about the AT&T It Can Wait 21-Day Challenge? You know, the pledge that encourages everyone struggling with the habit of distracted driving to put their phones away for 21 days. Well, my 21 days are up and it’s time to update you on my progress!
Tips to Stay Motivated
As I mentioned in my original post, distracted driving was already a habit I was trying to break. Over the past 3 weeks, I have been tested even more because I took an 8 hour road trip — alone — and simply seemed to be driving more than usual. It was the perfect opportunity to put my own tips for avoiding distracted driving to the test. After all, even though we are alone in the car, we are never along on the road. 64% of drivers use their smartphones when driving alone and I made sure I was not one of them.
Breaking an old habit can be a challenge in itself, but there are tips to stay motivated so that we don’t go back to our old ways:
Find Your Motivation
It may be difficult to “stay motivated” if you don’t know what your motivation is. For me, I found motivation by remembering that I have children looking at me to keep them safe. They rely on me (and their dad) to ensure their safety on the road, as much as it’s in our power to do so. Their little eyes see everything. Best of all, we have empowered them to feel bold enough to speak up when they are in the car with another driver and are not comfortable with them being on the phone. My favorite part? With a bit of persistence by them, as well as myself, their older sister has agreed to take the pledge as well!
I am a sticky note freak! They are everywhere. But, they are my daily reminders for inspiration, motivation and tasks. Find a way to remind yourself to keep your phone put away while driving. My daughter found a It Can Wait sticker that she put on her steering wheel. It’s right in her face when she’s behind the wheel and serves as a reminder that no text or post in worth a life. If you feel like you need something a bit more “aggressive” than a note or sticker, try the free AT&T DriveMode® app (on both Apple and Google Play), now available in Spanish and open to all carriers.
The best, most effective way to keep your phone out of your hands while driving is to simply put it away. Whether in your glove box, trunk, or even powered off in the back seat, once you remove the possibility of picking it up, it becomes easier to not need it on the road. Simply find a solution that works best for you.
AT&T’s It Can Wait Campaign is in its 6th year and is trying to reach 16 million pledges by the end of 2016! Since it launched, the campaign has inspired more than 5 million downloads of the free AT&T DriveMode® app. Most importantly, it has helped grow awareness of the dangers of smartphone distracted driving to more than 90% of audiences surveyed. Almost half of people who pledged said they still don’t use their smartphones while driving. Join me and let’s grow awareness about the problems of distracted driving and reach 16 million pledges in 2016!
Together, you and I can help AT&T reach, even SURPASS, their goal of 16 million pledges! Get a friend or family member to join you like I did with my daughter. Start today by taking the pledge and helping to change the social norm around distracted driving.
