Love and mercy to you and your friends tonight
Love & Mercy
Love & Mercy is an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson (portrayed by both Paul Dano and John Cusack), singer and songwriter for The Beach Boys. The movie examines the life of Wilson at two incredibly pivotal stages of his life: the peak of The Beach Boys’ fame in the 1960s, and the 1980s, as Brian reclaims his life after a mental breakdown. Both Dano and Cusack give extraordinary performances as they capture the story behind the musical genius that is Brian Wilson.
In the 1960s, Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson struggles with emerging psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece. In the 1980s, he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy.
In addition to real footage of Wilson, Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine) offers a remarkable rendition of the co-founder of the Beach Boys. Split into two distinct eras of Brian Wilson’s life, the movie journals the contrasting stages in which Wilson walked. Dano portrays the young, troubled Wilson whose life is spiraling out of control as his fame with The Beach Boys grows. An unethical psychologist, Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti), runs Brian’s life for years and helps leads him down a path of self-destruction under the guise of treatment.
Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks) meets Wilson and we watch as love rescues him from the grips of the terrible Landy. The sharp distinction between the two stages of Wilson’s life are intertwined and help to better understand the turmoil, triumphs and journey he took. As an audience, we are drawn into Wilson’s mind; intrigued by the struggles and victories throughout his career. It was Brian’s ambitious quest for more and refusal to settle that eventually led The Beach Boys to the front of the pack.
