The joys of homeschooling can also be a bit stressful as well… for me, at least. With all 4 of our older children, they attended public school for at least kindergarten. With our youngest, the concept of reading will be all on us. Therefore, I am thankful to be working with School Specialty in beginning this journey.
Learning to Read
We are using the Everyday Learning Fun Reading Teaching Resource Set from School Specialty with Joeli and she is enjoying the concept. The interactive digital pen not only aids her in learning to read, but also challenges her to properly handle a writing utensil. A little eye-hand coordination in addition to reading development is always a plus. Not to mention, the different titles keep her entertained and offer new stories for us to work through.
Let’s take a look at everything you will find inside the set first:
- interactive digital pen with batteries and headphones
- 1 each of 10 titles
- teaching cards
- digital chip containing files for all 10 books
- storage case
With Joeli’s speech disorder, phonetics are especially important for her to work on. Not only does the ELF Reading set teach her reading, but it also encourages her speech development. The ability to hear the words being spoken on the page gives her a better idea of how to say them correctly. Plus, she can repeat the words as she needs to fully understand and grasp its pronunciation.
The system is also simple enough that her older sisters can also read through the books with her. In fact, they get excited about doing so. Each session begins with using the digital pen to learn the words for the book. They then begin to read through each page slowly and, often, repeatedly. The stories are just the right length to keep her attention span captured and she enjoys the colorful graphics. Plus, the print is large and simple to read, so the system works great for her. Not to mention, the headphones included are an ideal fit and the sound is crystal clear.
