How to Name Your Blog :: Domain.ME

Disclosure: This post was inspired and sponsored by Domain.ME, the provider of the personal domains that end in .ME. As a company, they aim to promote thought leadership to the tech world. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

When I started this blog 10 years ago, I really never thought I would make a business out of it. Honestly, I didn’t really put much thought into it. I was looking for a place to share some thoughts and ideas on how we lived—on a pretty meager income. Colby was the only one working while I took care of the kids at home. Therefore, when I decided on the name it was more practical than, well, anything else. The name? Family of 6 on $26K/Year.

How to Name Your Blog

I wish someone had told me the importance of a good blog name as well as how to name your blog. When it was time to for me to move to WordPress, I decided it was also time to find a better name. At that point, 7 years ago, I was still trying to find my niche. Our family had grown by one and, although we were making a bit more than before, we were still on a limited budget. I decided to continue to play on that aspect of our family life, and after much deliberation, chose the name “7 on a Shoestring.” That is the name that most people now—and perhaps always—will know me by. Yet, if you look at my header, you will see that my blog name has changed again.

There are a lot of factors that need to go into finding a good name for your blog, especially if you plan to use it as an online business tool. It needs to not only represent the type of content or services you are offering, but it should also have an intuitive URL that people can remember even without your business card in hand. Domain.ME is a top-level domain provider, and the .ME extension offers the flexibility to create clever, memorable online destinations. From building your blog to creating your online reputation, here are four factors to consider when naming your blog:

  • What does it represent or mean to you? Is it more emotional or functional?
  • Does it make sense to other people?
  • Is it catchy/memorable?
  • Does it have a lasting appeal and scalability?

One of the biggest mistakes people make when launching their website is to back into a domain name by adding hyphens and getting creative with spellings in order to find an available .com. With so many people online, those domains you have in mind may not be available. That’s one reason .ME domains are ideal — there is still a much larger pool of available domain names. Not to mention, because you still want a good SEO value with your name,  .ME domains have the same SEO benefits as more traditional .COM domains.
