Hayley Atwell and James D’Arcy Dish on Season 2 of Marvel’s Agent Carter
“Marvel’s Agent Carter” returns tonight for another season sure to be filled with plenty of adventure and intrigue.
Hayley Atwell and James D’Arcy are back and this time they are in sunny California.
Marvel’s Agent Carter
Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) moves to the City of Angels in Season 2 to help Chief Daniel Sousa at the West Coast Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) investigate a bizarre homicide involving an alleged killer and Isodyne Energy.
While in Los Angeles, she reunites with some familiar faces. Plus, according to Executive Producer, Michele Fazekas, L.A. provides a perfect way to organically include Jarvis (James D’Arcy).
Not only do the two characters get along well on the show, but, in real life, they are hilarious together.
We sat down and talked with both Ms. Atwell and Mr. D’Arcy for a bit and it was the most fun we’ve had in an interview in a while.
They had us laughing hysterically! The chemistry between the two of them is genuine and they are truly great friends even off camera.
When Hayley Atwell was asked how she could relate to Agent Carter, she said that she is, “quite determined, quite single-minded, tenacious … all the bad stuff I relate to. All the good stuff, she’s amazing. I can’t relate.”
Yet James was quick to dismiss her — so she told him he could come back for Season 3.
As far as how Mr. D’Arcy relates to Jarvis, he notes that his character is “really kind and one of the world’s first feminists.”
While the other men were discounting Agent Carter, Jarvis was perhaps the only person that saw her as a “fully three-dimensional human being.”
And whereas D’Arcy can relate to that aspect of his character, he doesn’t believe he can compare to Jarvis’ ability to not be afraid to be uncool.
According to James D’Arcy, he is not only “afraid to be uncool… [he is] just uncool.” I don’t know about that though. He seems to have a pretty good following on the show!
Agent Carter was left in an “emotional place where she realized, in order to really move on with her life, she has to let go of Captain America” in Season 1, states Executive Producer Tara Butters.
Therefore, that leaves her open to exploring new relationships after her move to Los Angeles. As D’Arcy puts it, “there are a few gentlemen callers” this season.
“There are, not just one, but multi would-be Mr. Carters.” Definitely a storyline to keep your eyes open for as you tune in over the next few weeks!
Additionally, Peggy begins to see her job in a different light after the move. She begins to realize that she has a moral compass similar to Captain America and it is really challenged this season.
Not everyone is like her and she faces some new struggles that Tara Butters describes as “really fun to explore.”
Personally, I love the fact that Agent Peggy Carter is such a strong female role model. Hayley Atwell seemed to love that fact as well.
When asked about it she said, “It’s a very humbling experience.”
Moreover, she went on to state that “women are strong. They’ve just been underrepresented.”
Honestly, Ms. Atwell had plenty to say on this subject — and it was perfect!
“… the one thing that I think is great that people can relate to is that Peggy doesn’t have these superhero [qualities], and she’s at fault, and she makes mistakes, and she’s terrible in love, and she’s trying to sort things out.
But she has this drive, and she has determination and she has this kind of tenacious desire and purpose to get things done and to endure.
And, despite the situations that she finds herself [in], to get up every morning and put her curlers in and put her red lipstick on and get out there and be a part of the world and to engage in the world. A
nd I think that’s something that’s a very appealing quality for especially young girls to see — that despite whatever circumstance or situation or position that you’re in your life, whatever your background, whatever your socio-economic position in society, that heroic quality of just getting up in the morning and doing what needs to be done is very appealing to me— and completely underrepresented in this industry.”
Hayley’s passion for representing something so powerful and so important in the lives of women everywhere is noble.
I can’t wait to see what more comes from Marvel’s Agent Carter this season as she continues to be a “force for good in the world.”
