Being a child of the 80s, I was excited to see the bright-colored, crazy-haired dolls of my youth on the big screen in DreamWorks Animation’s latest film, “Trolls“. The movie follows two completely opposite trolls, Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake), on a journey to rescue their friends. Along the way, there is much more to be learned than the location of the other.
DreamWorks Animation Trolls
“Trolls” danced into theaters on Friday, November 4th and also includes the voice talents of Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Russell Brand, Zooey Deschanel and James Corden. Not to mention, you can sing and dance along to musical numbers that range from classics to new hits, such as Timberlake’s song, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”
Colby and I took the girls to the theater and didn’t know how much fun it would be for them. In addition to a terrific lesson to be learned within the story line, Joeli was out of her seat dancing along to the songs. You could easily follow the story through the emotions on her face as the Trolls sought to rescue their friends… and teach the Bergens about happiness. Joeli said she, “likes Poppy because she is happy like me!” I must agree, Joeli is definitely our Poppy!
The story begins when the Bergens invade Troll Village after following the sights and sounds of a celebration Poppy planned on the 20th Anniversary of being free from the Bergens. The much-larger Bergens believe they can only feel happiness when they eat Trolls, so they capture a handful of the Trolls and leave. Well, all in the village except Poppy and Branch. Together, they must set off to rescue their friends to bring them back home. Whereas Poppy finds joy in the journey, Branch is more of a practical survivalist who doesn’t like to sing.
Along the way, Poppy and Branch discover that much can be achieved by teamwork and determination. By not giving up, they are able to maneuver through some narrow escapes to ultimately find their friends. Yet even reaching their goal, they are still met with uncertainty as they try to make everyone happy before they leave. After all, Trolls are known for being joyful and they want others to be happy as well. But, how can they make the Bergens realize that they too can have happiness without eating the Trolls?
It’s only when they discover that “happiness comes from within“ that they can all be content. No matter how much you eat or how much you have, you can only find happiness within yourself — happiness, unlike the Trolls, cannot be consumed. Once you are proud of who you are, you will realize that happiness is already within you.
