DIY Photo Canvas

DIY Photo Canvas using Photo by Walgreens

My oldest daughter was engaged in September and I caught it all in pictures. With the holidays on my mind, I have been brainstorming ways to use them to create a great gift for them.

Since photo canvases are a fabulous way to display memories, I decided to make one I could give them to commemorate the moment.

DIY Photo Canvas

Photo canvases are a fabulous way to beautifully display captured moments. They demand attention as they become 3-dimensional and highlight the subject.

But, being able to purchase a store bought one may not always be in the budget.

Thankfully, using Walgreens photo center and a few craft supplies, you can make your own with a smaller finished cost.

Make a few and give them to family members as holiday gifts. After all, the best gifts are handmade.

Supplies:

  • photo printed at 8×10 photo printed at Photo by Walgreens
  • artist canvas
  • Mod Podge
  • foam brush
  • acrylic paint
  • stapler (optional)
  • ribbon (optional)

Directions:

  1. Size up your photo and canvas. You may need to trim the picture to fit the shape of the canvas.
  2. Using a foam brush and the acrylic paint you chose, paint around the outside edge of the canvas. You may also want to paint a ½” border around the canvas in case the photo does not go completely to the outer edge. paint outer edges
  3. After the paint has dried, use a foam brush to coat the outer edges of the canvas (if so desired) with Mod Podge.
  4. Next, apply a thick layer of Mod Podge to the front of the canvas and carefully lay your photo over it once fully covered. Firmly press from one side to the other to push out air bubbles and make sure it is completely adhered to the canvas.
  5. Once the photo is properly positioned and attached, add thin, even coats of Mod Podge across the top of the photo using the foam brush. A thin coat on the brush and a long stroke from one end of the canvas to the other works best. DIY photo canvas
  6. Finally, when the Mod Podge has dried completely, carefully staple a ribbon to the back of the canvas for easy hanging. This step is optional, as you may also want to prop the picture on a shelf, table, mantle, etc.

The entire process from beginning to end really takes about 15 minutes. The longest part of the craft is waiting for the Mod Podge and paint to dry. Of course, the paint may be optional as well depending on what you want your final result to be.
