Did you grow up with an American Girl doll?
I have to admit, I was already in Junior High when the dolls came out. Yep, showing my age here. But my girls? Wow. They are obsessed with American Girl. Well, that is putting it lightly. My 8-year-old daughter Jaci literally talks of nothing else.
My Girls And American Girl
Let me paint you a picture. We have an upstairs game room area. At the top of the stairs, there is a room that sits in the middle of all – the bedroom. This used to be a TV room but we recently decided to move the TV downstairs. Ever since then, that area has become a house of sorts for the girls’ 18″ dolls.
They have divided up the room into smaller areas. Each area is a room for another doll. Some dolls actually share a room and have bunk beds. The bunk beds by the way? My dad made them for the girls after they begged him for months. Two weeks ago we had to buy another bed. These dolls live better than me!
But, I completely understand the infatuation. These 18″ dolls represent a variety of cultures, time periods, and everyday girls. Not to mention, the ability to create a doll that looks like you. How much fun is that? As a little girl, I have no doubt that would have been amazing. For now, I live vicariously through my girls and enjoy seeing their eyes light up every time they talk about the American Girl line of dolls and accessories.
Summer Destination for Fun
If you’re looking for something fun to do with your family this summer, head to American Girl! The first time we went to our local store I thought we would never get Jaci out! It is fabulous to just walk through… plus they offer a variety of great activities:
- Parties and Special Packages: If your daughter is obsessed as mine, an American Girl party is the perfect way to celebrate any occasion. Parties can include a gourmet meal, signature desserts, goody bags, doll tiaras, games, crafts and more.
- Exclusive Events: Bring your daughter in and let her enjoy a cooking class. Watch for author signing dates or unique events and workshops coming to your local store.
- Dining: This was one of Jaci’s favorites. Bring your American Girl doll in because there are special seats just for her! Make reservations at the Cafe or just drop into a Bistro if they are available in your area. So much fun!
- American Girl Doll Hair Salon: I have to admit, Colby did not know this existed and was a little amazed as he stood and watched. Yes, you can bring your doll in for a little pampering. She can get a new hairstyle and even get her ears pierced! Love this! I know Jaci sees her dolls as real people, friends… and this simply means so much to her.
Again, for me, it’s all about seeing those eyes light up with the joy an American Girl doll brings her!
Isabelle Movie Premiere
One of the biggest events of this summer in the American Girl world was the “Isabelle” movie premiere. That’s right! Isabelle’s movie was coming to DVD and the news was huge. My 8 year old daughter had been talking about it for months. Being at the premiere was going to be the highlight of her summer. No way could I let her miss it!
She grabbed her American Girl doll, which she has finally decided to name Paisley, as well as her sister and I, and we went to Dallas to our local store. Radio Disney was there with fun games and prizes, as well as several more American Girl doll fans.
In fact, American Girl really rolled out the red carpet for us. Literally. A red carpet and picture-perfect photo wall. As well as ballerina shoe cookies, popcorn, lemonade… and even popcorn for each of the American Girl dolls present. And, yes, they were tons!
It was fascinating to see these girls get so excited and celebrate with their peers. Plus, the movie was fantastic. I was delightfully surprised by how much I enjoyed it… and even more so when I had to hold back tears! It was truly an amazing experience with my girls. Even better When the Isabelle DVD showed up at our house this week. Now she can share the movie with her fellow American Girl doll friends!
