On Friday, March 24, a new Amazon Original Special will come to Prime Video.
Ivy & Julie 1976
An American Girl Story – Ivy & Julie 1976: A Happy Balance introduces us to Ivy Ling. Ivy (Nina Lu, BUNK’D) is a 10-year-old Chinese-American girl who struggles with finding a balance between her two cultural identities: Chinese and American. With her family’s Chinese traditions and obligations, she wishes to be like her all-American best friend, Julie Albright (Hannah Nordberg). When her gymnastics tournament and family’s big Chinese New Year dinner land on the same day, Ivy relies on Julie to guide her with a difficult choice. The special also stars Gwendoline Yeo (American Crime) and Lance Lim (School of Rock).
Coming from a multi-cultural family, I could completely relate with the way Ivy felt torn between her Chine-American cultures. For me, hearing my own grandmother’s immigration story changed my perspective on the way I felt about my heritage. For Ivy, hearing her grandparent’s plight opens her eyes to the sacrifices they made to make a better life for future generations. Yet, even upon learning this, Ivy must decide on which event she should attend. Fortunately, she has Julie there to help her talk it through. And it’s through this conversation, that Ivy learns that Julie’s life isn’t as perfect as she believed it to be.
Does Ivy decide to attend the tournament or dinner?
