I am sure we have experienced an event or two in our lives that causes us to grow stronger. I know that, personally, I have been through several. Including a handful just in the last 5 years. Each one has taught me a life lesson. Made me stronger. From suffering my 1st miscarriage almost exactly 5 years ago to my mom being diagnosed with Lymphoma. And during that time, I also learned that I have a daughter that believes in carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her diagnosis of anorexia came when she was 7 years old. That was in January 2011 and began a journey we never could have imagined.

Notice the blank stare in my middle daughter’s face? That was what we faced for months.

Growing Stronger

We never know what our body, heart or mind can handle until it is put to the test. In some situations, we are left with no other recourse than growing stronger in the face of adversity. That is what I had to do with my daughter’s struggles. Children can only really control two things in their lives: what they put in and what they put out. With the weight of a number of things weighing on her, my daughter had already begun to struggle with the “what goes out” issue. Around Christmas that year she added the “what goes in” and simply stopped eating. When her already frail body lost over 2 pounds in a week it was a cause for concern.

A week in the local Children’s Hospital got us back on track with eating… but led us towards a downward spiral no one ever wants to be on. She had an adverse reaction to her medication that led to fits of rage. Daily. While my husband was at work. My oldest daughter would take the younger two girls and my son would help me keep her locked into my arms and legs until my husband came home. We took turns sleeping. Hid all the knives. Unplugged the microwave. Things escalated until she threatened to kill me and the baby. At this point SHE asked to go to the hospital. That was 2 years ago this week.

After a week in another local children’s psychiatric ward, she came out doing a little bit better. We immediately began to wean her off her medications. The 7 doctors and therapists we were seeing each month eventually went down to just 1 this past year. She still struggles with chronic constipation, but her moods are once again normal. No more threats. no more fear. THIS one event taught me more about growing stronger than any I have ever faced.

My husband and I were forced to make tough decisions. We had to go into defensive mode for both our daughter in need… as well as for our family as a whole. We had to fight to get her out of one facility that was less than deplorable. I had to endure an hour and a half ambulance ride with my daughter in the back. I spent a week away from my family in a Ronald McDonald House in order to be there for every minute I was allowed to see my daughter. I did what I had to in order to get my daughter better. And today she is back to 100%. We all managed growing stronger together.

During an attempt at a VBAC for my second child, my uterus ruptured and I was as close to heaven as I’ve ever been. I’m thankful to be alive today to me my children’s mommy. I have 2 girls and a third due on Monday (c-section). My life is in God’s hands. This experience has made me not only stronger, but more aware of the brevity of life.
