Building Relationships with My Daughters

It can be difficult in today’s world to simply connect with our children. The generation gaps alone can cause so many issues. And believe me, with my 4 girls ranging from toddler to teen with  few in the middle, I am all over the place with building relationships with my daughters. They definitely keep me on my toes and I would not change it for a minute. Working with the U by Kotex Tween campaign has helped me continue working on those bonding moments.

Daughters

Not only did the campaign push me to tackle those harder topics with my younger girls, but the tips and stories encouraged me as well. When I talked to my oldest daughter about the topic of menstruation it was a whole different ball game. She asked me about it and I laid it all out at once. When the time came she was still well prepared, but was more inclined to ask her brother about it than me. Let’s hope the younger girls know they can come straight to me when that moment happens.

Memorable Moments

Over the course of the campaign, I have been able to talk to my (almost) 9 year old about the impending changes in her body. Having the products and resources available from U by Kotex Tween has been a great way to engage in conversation and create memorable moments. We have been able to easily and openly discuss the signs that her period is near as well as how to properly track her period.  Plus, along the way I even decided to let the girls pick one thing that they would most want to do if they could. Their choice? Have a spa day.

Therefore, we picked up some new nail polish, facial masks, and foot soak ingredients. We then spent an evening… with all 4 daughters… and daddy… just having a spa day. The girls were treated as the princesses they wish to be and we all had a great time. Plus, the girls all had smoother faces and feet, and pretty nails to show off afterwards. Not to mention, the smiles on their faces made it all worth it. I am not girly by any stretch of the word but I love doing things with my girls. I am grateful for the opportunity and motivation to do so more through this campaign. I am pretty sure my daughters would all say the same.

Have you had the talk yet with your daughter? If yes, how did you read the cues that she was ready? If not, how do you plan on approaching the subject? Is there a special Mother-Daughter activity you share that you can use to help ease into the discussion? Find tips on how to talk to your daughter about her period on the U by Kotex Tween website.

  1. We had “the talk” when she was 9. Her pediatrician suggested it, I thought it was too early. I’m glad I did though, because the same month she turned 10, it would have been too late.

  2. That is so cute. we use to do that when we were growing up too.

I talked with my daughter when she was almost 10 years old. I knew she would be getting close to starting. what I did was have a girls movie night when my husband was out of town. We both curled up in my bed and just talked and I brought up the subject. I talked a lot about family history so she wouldn’t be shocked with how bad the cramps were. Once I got the ball rolling it was a lot easier then I expected.
