Exposing Skin to Sunlight
My family has a long history of cancer. Lung cancer, bone cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, Leukemia, Lymphoma and Melanoma are just a few of the types of cancer that have presented themselves in my family genes. I lost my grandmother and aunt within 8 months of each other to lung cancer and have had surgery myself to remove early stages of cervical cancer. My mother is a Lymphoma Survivor and we pray she remains in remission for the rest of her years. The one cancer that seems to be seen most in my family is Melanoma. My grandfather, aunts, and mom have all had spots removed from their skin. It would appear that skin cancer is not something to mess around with in our family for sure. I know I have at least 5 reasons to take care of myself and my family.
In fact, did you know that one American dies of melanoma almost every hour? And the number of cases in the Latino community is increasing? Yet many people still ignore the serious repercussions of exposing skin to sunlight and harmful UVA and UVB radiation without protection. They still go to tanning salons, sun bath, and spend long periods of time outside without using sunscreen. It has also been found that compared to Caucasian women, fewer Hispanic women believe it is important to wear sunscreen daily, and they are under the impression that darker skin is at low risk for melanoma. This is not true. The sun’s rays are harmful to anyone not protecting their skin properly. In fact, even those who tan indoors just 4 times a year increase their risk of developing Melanoma by 11%. We will be spending our summer days playing in the sun and protecting our skin!
