Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks
DreamWorks Pictures drama/comedy about family, inspired by true events, stars Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks. Sam {Chris Pine} is a fast-talking salesman in the high volume bartering business. As his job is falling out from under him causing a financial collapse, he learns that his father has passed. Upon returning to his childhood home, pieces of his past are revealed that he had no knowledge of before. One of those revelations involves a secret kept from him by both of his parents and it turns his world upside down. Frankie {Elizabeth Banks} is a struggling single mom of a precocious, rebellious son {Michael Hall D’Addario}. She has no idea that the man that has just walked into her life is actually the half-brother she grew up resenting.
As soon as the movie began I was drawn into the drama. Listening to Sam talk his way through his daily sales activities was fascinating. My emotions were quickly engulfed as he talked to his boss and the scene was set for his financial demise. A ride home and an emotional hug from Olivia Wilde were all I needed to become fully immersed into Sam’s life and emotions. From that point on I could not stop watching and did not want to miss a moment.
As each piece of the puzzle was interlocked, the movie “pulled on our heartstrings” more and more {as my daughter put it}. Going through a host of emotions with Sam as he finds out about Frankie and battles what he should do with the secret that was just revealed to him. Feeling Frankie’s frustrations with her son Josh and seeing how her feelings towards Sam begin to change over time. Understanding the reasons behind Josh’s behavior. And then the unveiling of who exactly Sam is developing into as the entire process plays out and his relationship with his mom {Michelle Pfeiffer} is further challenged.
I watched every second of People Like Us and cannot wait to watch it again. It has quickly become one of my favorite movies. Funny. Sad. Heart wrenching. Adoring. Everything wrapped into one.
