We’re home schooling homeschoolers!

Okay, what was the first thing that came to your mind? Be honest. For most, especially non-homeschoolers, you may have had some of these thoughts: weird, strange {check out another post I wrote on this subject}, distant, shy, withdrawn, hippies, super smart, prodigy, and exceptional, to name a few.

While, sometimes those are some of the adjectives that describe homeschoolers, those are not words that describe the majority of us. Well, at least not most of the time.

We are normal people. We have faults. We have weaknesses and gifts, just like every other person. We don’t wear jumpers {although there is nothing wrong with that}. We do cut our hair, although not as much as we used too {no time to get to the beautician for me}. We have cell phones {sometimes even our kids do too}. We wear jeans; even to church sometimes! {Gasp!}

Personally, I struggle to get one of my kids to practice piano every day. We battle with behavioral issues, just like every other parent. My high schooler struggles with Algebra, just like she did at “school.” My biased opinion of my kids is that they‘re “exceptional” but by no means prodigies. They’re just normal average kids, just like the ones who attend school.

We frequent the library more often now. We go to church most of the time, but we do miss on occasion. We use the Internet more to purchase things because it’s easier than dragging the kids to the store. We actually like each other {even though we spend a lot of time together}. And the kids actually seem to retain a lot of what I am teaching.

It’s just like when someone graduates from high school. One can choose to go to a “tech school” for some sort of job specific training, another one may choose to go to a 2- year college or a 4-year university, one can go in the military, and then there are those who choose to start working immediately. Education has choices, even before high school. The best part is that in most states it’s very easy to choose to home educate.

So, when I say, “we are home schooling homeschoolers”, I only mean that we just happen to home educate instead of sending our kids off to be educated. And in this day and age, there is nothing abnormal about it. Did you know home education is on the rise?

Yep, more and more families, like us, are choosing to home school their kids too. I won’t get into the reasons because each family has their own. But just think the next time you hear someone say, “we are homeschoolers”, know they are normal just like anyone else. We just make different educational choices for our children.

Jen was born and raised in the Midwest. But is geographically displaced because she wasn’t made for the cold, snowy winters. She loves the Lord. She loves her husband. And loves home educating her 15-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son. She started writing in college and was pressured to start a frugal “homeschooling” blog by her ‘How to Write a Children’s Story’ online-teacher, in the summer of 2010. Since, she had already tried blogging, she was reluctant to try it again. But quickly found her niche at GricefullyHomeschooling.com.
